Description
 
The Design Engineer performs duties related to the detailed design of customized material handling equipment (typically overhead and gantry crane bridges and trolleys, railroad shop service hoists, body support stands and similar devices) and various assorted components.

Under general direction:

• Creates graphical design layouts of material handling equipment.
• Creates detail drawings of individual parts, mechanical assemblies and equipment general arrangements.
• Determines appropriate weld information, surface finishes, fits and tolerances, fastener lengths and similar fabrication and machining details in accordance with Whiting design standards and or direction from Sr. Designers and Sr. Design Engineers. Indicate this information on detail drawings as appropriate.
• Performs machinery and structural calculations confirming sizing, thickness and performance against requirements.
• Back checks own work prior to turning work over to Sr. Designer or Sr. Design Engineer for final review.
• Checks detail drawings created by designers.
• Provides customer service and warranty support as required.
• Supports overall company performance goals.

Reports to: Product Engineering Supervisor or Transportation Product Group Supervisor

Uses: Microsoft Office (incl. Excel, Word), drawing system (AutoCAD), SolidWorks, manual drafting tools and techniques (occasional work on old drawings), Computerized Analysis programs.

Job Requirements:

• BSME or BSMET, BSSE, BSCE, BSAE or equivalent.
• 2 years professional design experience in a Mechanical or Structural field preferred.
• Mechanical drawing skills required.
• Expereince with structural steel detailing and design.
• Experience in design of weldments.
• Ability to read and understand ,machinery and structural drawings, familiarity with weld design, strong mathematical abilities and mechanical aptitude required.
• Occasional work in manufacturing areas to provide technical assistance or interpretation of drawings; use of PPE (personal protective equipment) as required in Whiting manufacturing areas.
• Ideal candidate must be a good communicator, both verbal and written.
• Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office, AutoCAD and SolidWorks.

Performs other duties as assigned. Participates in Continuous Improvement and 6S.
Follows safety rules and keeps work area in clean and orderly condition.
