Description
Job Purpose
Employees in this job supervise machinists’ fabrication work. The employee must be skillful in the use of a variety of metal machining tools and precision measuring devices to cut, grind, or otherwise shape metal parts into conformance with specified dimensions. The employee is required to understand and interpret blueprints, sketches, or other description of parts to be fabricated, and to select materials and plan the sequence of operations to be performed by staff in accordance with accepted methods and standards of the machinist trade. The work requires knowledge of supervisory techniques, personnel policies, and procedures.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Supervise 10 -25 machine employees (Multiple shifts)
- Oversee creation of standard and customized parts.
- Building a working relationship with Engineering department.
- Manage schedule to customer and company goals.
- Ensure parts and prints are correct for employees before process starts.
- Create goals for each employee to ensure schedule is completed on time.
- Manage safety, quality, productivity and cost reductions in machine department.
- Planning and managing continuous improvement and safety initiatives in department.
- Payroll and time sheet management.
- Conduct new and senior employees’ yearly reviews.
- Manage safety in the department and engage the employees in the 6S process.
- Improving the purchase order process in machine shop.
- Work with Quality support team to achieve department goals.
- Work with Maintenance on improving PM process in machine shop.
- Have an understanding of manual machines and trouble shoot issues.
- Create an engagement process to ensure all issues are being addressed in the department.
- Communicate any issues to upper leadership.
- Material flow process.
- Manage department daily goals and able to develop a recovery plan in timely manner.
Qualifications
- Ability to apply shop mathematics to practical problems such as computing dimensions, laying out work, and setting up machine tools.
- Ability to apply machinist craft techniques, processes, and principles.
- Skill in the operation of machine tools and the use of precision measuring devices.
- Ability to communicate effectively.
- Ability to determine work priorities and delegate work to others.
- Ability to read and work from sketches, specifications, and blueprints.
- Some knowledge of training and supervisory techniques.
- Knowledge of the machining qualities, properties, and uses of various metals such as steel, cast iron, and stainless steel.
- Knowledge of the methods, practices, tools, and equipment of the machinist trade.
- Knowledge of equal employment opportunity policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of labor relations.
- Knowledge of employee policies and procedures.
Working Conditions
- Some jobs require an employee to work in an environment that involves exposure to unpleasant odors and noise.
Education
- HS diploma.
- Six years of experience in the machine trade, including two years equivalent to a Machinist or 3 years of Lead for a manufacturing industry.
